The Asphalt Paving Level 1 Quality Control Technician reports to and assists the contractor during paving operations. The technician must safely and efficiently collect samples for testing asphalt materials and perform coring operations. He or she must utilize nuclear density gauges for asphalt compaction and assist in establishing a rolling pattern.

The Roller Operator operates the roller to compact the asphalt. He or she must determine the speed and direction of the roller to achieve proper density and smoothness.

The Lute Person uses the lute rake to seal asphalt joints and assist in hand work areas. This person is responsible for looking after the mat and ensuring there are no defects in it.

The Screed Operator must understand the components of the paving operation, such as the angle of attack and the slope. He or she will set and heat the screed prior to the start of paving and must make adjustments when necessary throughout the operation. The Screed Operator controls the amount of material being used and is responsible for consistent mat texture and proper joint construction.

The Laborer assists the crew during the paving operation. Duties include but are not limited to shoveling, raking and leveling asphalt on the job as well as looking after the mat and assist in raking, sweeping and shoveling asphalt.

The Paver Operator drives the paver and alerts the crew to which area they are moving. He or she controls the pace of paving and maintains a consistent head of material.

The Dump Person safely directs haul trucks to the paver and alerts the driver when to dump the asphalt into the hopper. He or she also collects load tickets from the drivers.

The Asphalt Paving Level 2 Quality Control Technician is responsible for quality control and reporting to and assisting the contractor during paving operations. The technician will collect load tickets from the haul truck drivers, record the temperature of the mix when it arrives to the job, calculate spread rates and complete straightedge testing. He or she will report non-compliant test results to the superintendent when applicable.

The haul truck driver must properly load his or her truck at the asphalt plant and deliver the asphalt to the job site. During the paving operation the driver must stay centered in front of the paver and pay attention to the dump person so to fill the hopper efficiently.

The Foreman supervises the paving operation and has the ability and experience to work in any other position on the paving train. The foreman is responsible for planning and managing all aspects of the job, including the crew members. He or she is responsible for understanding the scope of the job and ensuring his or her crew works safely and efficiently.

The Diesel Mechanic inspects and repairs the equipment on the paving train. He or she performs preventative maintenance as well as repairs equipment when needed on the job site.
